Every once and awhile a session comes around that just fills me with so much joy, creativity, excitement, and gratitude for what I get to do. This was one of those. I never take for granted the gift it is to be allowed into someones scared first few weeks with their new family member! Newborn sessions are always slow, and calm too, because we let baby run the show. Really just the chefs kiss and definitely my favorite type of session to photograph!
When I think of film photography, I think of whimsical, green, lush backdrops. But what happens when it’s March and everything outdoors is screaming WINTER? You follow the lead of a pregnant city planner and you take your photos downtown. This session really invigorated my creativity. I had no idea, but it was exactly what I needed! To jump out of my comfort zone (the 4 favorite parks to shoot at), and do something new. It was thrilling and I love love love how these images turned out.
Did you know? I started this whole journey into photography because I was a doula attending births and recognizing that taking iphone photos was great and all, but I knew I could offer more. That is when the journey into learning how to take low light, limited flash photography started. Lately, I have stepped back from the doula world, as it quickly became apparent that being on call with two co-sleeping little ones was not for the faint at heart.
If you find yourself in a maternity session with me, you might expect some strange requests. I will almost always ask my maternity mamas to lay on the ground. In a field? In a forest? On a bridge? In the dirt? I will always have a blanket for you but this pose tends to be one of my favorites.
Not every day that I love a smiling and looking at the camera photo as much as I love this one. It’s likely because these sweet smiling faces are very important to me! We got to get a sweet session in when we visited these lovely faces in Michigan. The smiles are definitely thanks to the grandparents and cousins standing behind me.
This family was the sweetest! They clearly loved each other so much and were so excited about their new baby sister! I also think mom did a stunning job styling everyone. The key to this session? Snacks and lots of playing. I think that having an interesting landscape to explore, helps to draw out kids natural inquisitive nature. It was so fun to explore with them!
